Europe and Japan will work together on a strategy to make the Internet safer for children and teenagers. The new strategy was announced by Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes on Wednesday. On Thursday, she met with Tatsuo Kawabata, Japanese minister for Internal affairs and Communications to discuss how the European Union and Japan could collaborate on such plans.
Drivers may soon be able to order food using their car navigation systems en route to restaurants with drive-thru service. A group of 26 private-sector firms, including McDonald's Holdings Co. (Japan) (2702), and the government-backed Highway Industry Development Organization will test a service that makes use of so-called intelligent transport systems.

Android is poised to receive a significant boost in Japan after Yahoo revealed plans to build a dedicated app store for the Google mobile operating system next year, according a report from Japanese tech blog Asiajin. The ‘Yahoo! Market’ store will allow Japanese Android smartphone owners to download applications directly from its site, while local developers will be able to upload apps to the store bypassing Android’s official app store altogether.

The Justice Ministry has decided to station about 50 foreign-language interpreters next fiscal year at immigration clearance counters of 18 airports and seaports across the country, a move apparently designed to cope with the increase in visitors from other Asian countries. It is estimated hiring such interpreters from the private sector will cost 300 million yen, the ministry said.

Its creators at electronics firm Panasonic say the machine features the latest robotic technology and could help replace human care-givers in this rapidly aging nation without degrading the quality of the service.
Local governments and businesses in western Japan will launch special sales events in the Kansai region this autumn and winter to attract foreign tourists, especially from China, by promoting shopping attractions in the region, organizers said. The campaign is aimed at reviving travel to the region by foreign tourists, whose numbers nose-dived in the aftermath of the March earthquake and tsunami and ensuing nuclear plant disaster in northeastern Japan.
