Sega displayed a new game concept for male bathrooms at Digital Signage Japan 2011. They actually displayed it in the bathrooms at this show, getting a lot of attention from attendees. "We think guys have experienced aiming at a variety of things when they go to the bathroom. Here we want them to progress through a game when they aim at a target in the toilet. We think this is a completely new concept where they can play a game without using their hands or fingers."
The NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories are conducting basic research into technology to automatically generate animated sign language in order to expand sign language broadcasts. They introduced an automatic sign language translation system at Technology Open House 2011, converting strings of words using Japanese as well as sign language sample texts.
Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank, Inc. - Japan's exclusive carrier of Apple products - has taken the company in an unexpected direction this week. Softbank invested $62.5 million into Gilt Groupe, Inc., the online luxury retailer whose flash sale business model has brought it plenty of visibility and venture capital interest (although no profits yet). Softbank's investment earned it a 50% stake in Gilt Groupe Japan, the retailer's only international subsidiary.
